When Covid-19 hit in March 2020, bandleader and composer Ruud Voesten (ROEST, Branie.) took the mandatory free time to dive into one of the world’s most famous literary work from the Dark Ages: Dante Alighieri’s Inferno. In this first part of the Divine Comedy, which is very critical on society, Dante researches his own humanity, his society and his position therein by descending through the ten rings of hell and confronting the seven capital sins.
With Inferno as his guide and the lockdown as a catalyst, Ruud reviewed his own personal connection to the capital sins. Reflecting on theme’s like lust, anger and betrayal brought him a wide range of connections, motives and emotions which he put to music. Ambrosia brings to life his new music full of strong melodies and dark harmonies, contrasted with collective improvisation to depict this journey through hell.

Toen in maart 2020 covid-19 toesloeg in Nederland, heeft bandleider en componist Ruud Voesten (ROEST, Branie.) de verplichte vrije tijd gebruikt om zich te verdiepen in één van ’s werelds befaamdste literaire werken uit de middeleeuwen: Dante Alighieri’s Inferno. In dit eerste deel van de Goddelijke Komedie, welke zeer kritisch is op maatschappij en religie, onderzoekt Dante zijn eigen menselijkheid, maatschappij en zijn positie daarin door af te dalen door de tien ringen van de hel en een confrontatie met de zeven hoofdzonden aan te gaan.
Met Inferno als gids en de lockdown als katalysator onderzocht Ruud zijn persoonlijke relatie tot deze hoofdzonden. Het reflecteren op thema’s als lust, woede en verraad leverde Ruud een rijke verzameling aan verbanden, motieven en emoties op die hij heeft verwerkt in een nieuw repertoire. Verwacht een akoestische combinatie van donkere harmonie, zoekende melodieën doorspekt met een catharsis van improvisatie.
